All Systems go for the Downs Dasher
(added 19/12/08)

From the sporting fields to the main street and even in the backyard, the once familiar whistle of SDSR’s steam train resounded across Warwick.

This sound signified the new beginning from years of hard work for the members of SDSR, some of who jumped for joy as they hopped off the first successful trial passenger trip of the C17 Steam Locomotive and 2 restored carriages.

The train has received the green light from a certified engineer who found the train met all requirements to travel on QR main lines. SDSR President Bob Keogh is looking forward to experiencing the magic of steam travel once again.

“I worked as a train driver for many years, and when diesel trains came in, I felt like we lost something special.” Mr Keogh said.
Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Bev Marston is over the moon at the possibilities the steam train could offer, not only on a local level, but also a regional one.

“I traveled on this first train, and it was such a charming experience – it show cases how beautiful the region is and the train itself is a piece of history that has been bought back to life.” Mrs Marston said.

Now that the locomotive and 2 carriages are fully tested, the first Passenger Services will be running on the Australia Day Long weekend to Clifton and Hendon. To find out more and book tickets, please check the events page.
