After seven years of backbreaking labour and countless hours spent in
the shed, the Southern Downs Steam Railway locomotive came to life on
Wednesday.
Chief engineer John Brady was on board when the engine chugged down the
line for the first time in 50 years.
"After seven years of work it was a pleasure to hear it go,"
Mr Brady said.
"The locomotive was stripped right back to basics and rebuilt and
a new boiler was installed."
Mr Brady was is one of eight volunteers, dubbed Dad’s Army, who
have worked on the project.
SDSR president Bob Keogh said people would have the chance to see the
locomotive in action and have photos taken with the locomotive it steaming
at an open day on Sunday.
"It’s very special people can get up close and personal with
the locomotive," he said.
"We’d really like a lot of support from residents so we can
fulfil our dreams."
Mr Keogh said he hopes to have the locomotive soon running the Wallangarra
and Clifton service soon.
Queensland Rail tutor driver and SDSR member Alwyn Clark said the restoration
was a great achievement.
"The dedicated members of Dad’s Army have fronted up for years
and worked tirelessly on this project," he said.
The open day at the SDSR yard will be open run from 10am to 4pm on Sunday,
with the locomotive dedication at 11am.
